Mechanism of action

BASTA® blocks the enzyme glutamine synthetase, as a result of which the ammonia content in plant cells increases, which leads to cell death and photosynthesis arrest. The active substance of BASTA®, ammonium glufosinate, is a modification of the naturally occurring metabolic product of the soil fungus Streptomyces spp. Its chemical structure is close to the natural amino acid glutamine. BASTA® is absorbed by the green parts of plants, but is not absorbed by the roots from the soil.
